I would advise against vertical stickers for anything more than 4 letters as the stickers are just too big. I use a nice bold and wide font on the SOLAS stickers so horizontal stickers work very well. No DSMB stays bolt upright during an entire ascent so vertical stickers are not really required. They are also more expensive.

Right - got a reply from yer man in dive signs. Can you all confirm that if you are over 3 letters Horizontal is okay?

I think you are okay vertical (ie - you are less than 4 letters). Main culprits are:
Me (going horizontal baby!!)

Nope - tape for either print will have to go vertical on the smb
